Mindfulness and Stress
The mind is the best resource a human being has. Mindfulness is a particular practice used to cultivate mind – and there are many reason we would want to do this. One important reason to cultivate mind is to learn to live with stress in a healthy way.
Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) is one of the best ways to learn mindfulness. It is an eight week program plus one full day of learning to take something that you do anyway and putting it to good use for yourself.
The MBSR program was created by Jon Kabat-Zinn (See below.) People who have trained to teach this program provide a well-researched course. And the teachers themselves are required to have years of practice in order to teach it. If you want to invest your time and money in learning this new skill, this is one of the best courses you can find.
Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction
Who is this man and why should you listen to him?
This man is Dr. Jon Kabat-Zinn. Thirty years ago he designed a program called Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) for patients with conditions their doctors could provide no further treatment for at University of Massachusetts Hospital.
Because the program was conducted in a standard manner and with a standard content, Kabat-Zinn and other researchers were able to study the effects of mindfulness upon health. Significant positive changes were seen to occur in program participants as measured by self-reported pre- and post tests.
Now, with the advent of MRI and fMRI technology, we can see actual brain changes that result from this program and others that teach people to engage in mindfulness meditation. The practice of mindfulness is relevant for healthy and happy people as well as for those with illness. Athletes, students, nurses, doctors, entertainers, parents, and busy people of every kind can all benefit.
